Vecchie letrose (“old hags”) is a polyphonic song composed by Adrian Willaert. This version is written for recorder quartet, the tenor part can also be played by an alto recorder.
This piece is a part of the Cancionero de Palacio, also called Cancionero de Barbieri, a spanish manuscript that contains more than 400 polyphonic songs.
We know nothing about this composer “Luchas”.
The lyrics are about love and use a lot of metaphor with “to hunt for love”.
These are 2 pieces on the same theme : a pavane, slow processional dance, followed by a galliard, faster with jumps. This pair of dances is typical of the 16th century.
The pieces called Ferrareze are based upon the chords progression of the passamezzo.
